Overnight Oats vs. Baked Oats
Baked oats and overnight oats are both popular healthy breakfast options, but they’re totally different in texture and prep! Overnight oats are soaked in liquid overnight and then served cold, making them creamy and easy to grab straight from the fridge. Baked oats, on the other hand, are warm, cake-like, and perfect for a cozy breakfast or brunch!
Ingredients for Apple Oats
Apple Oats
- Rolled Oats
- Almond Milk – Feel free to substitute with any type of plant-based milk or regular milk!
- Egg
- Cinnamon

- Baking Powder
- Vanilla Extract
- Finely Diced Apple (peeled)
- Salt
Cinnamon Streusel
- Diced Apples
- Melted Coconut Oil – Vegan butter or regular butter works great, too!
- Almond Flour
- Cinnamon
- Brown Sugar
Drizzle Topping (Optional)
- White Chocolate Chips – Or you can skip the drizzle and just mix these into the batter.
- Coconut Oil

How to Make Baked Oats
Make these oats in a 1-2 serving portion or a large casserole/baking dish if you’re making them for a crowd! Here’s how to make them:
Single Serving Recipe (1-2 Servings)
*You’ll need a 6-inch ramekin or 2 3-inch ramekins, depending on the serving size you want.
- Mix the dry ingredients, then add in the liquid ingredients and stir until evenly mixed.
- Divide into ramekins.
- Mix the streusel ingredients together and spoon over the baked oats.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, then let cool for 5 minutes.
- Optional: melt white chocolate and coconut oil together, then drizzle over the oats and enjoy!
9×13″ Baking Dish Recipe (8 Servings)
*You’ll need a 9×13″ baking dish (or something equivalent in size).
- Combine the rolled oats, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the almond milk, vanilla extract, maple syrup, and eggs. Mix and fold in diced apples.
- In a separate bowl, combine diced apples with melted coconut oil.
- Add the almond flour, cinnamon, and brown sugar, mixing until evenly coated.
- Spoon the streusel topping evenly over the oat mixture.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown and the center is set. Let cool for 5-10 minutes.
- Optional: melt white chocolate chips with coconut oil, then drizzle over the baked oats and enjoy!

Make-Ahead Baked Oats
To meal prep these oats, mix the baked oats ingredients except for the egg to make the “batter” the night before. In the morning while the oven preheats, mix in the egg, make the streusel topping, add over the oats, and bake!
How to Store
Refrigerating – Store leftover baked oats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Just reheat individual portions in the microwave for a quick and cozy breakfast!
Freezing – To freeze, let the baked oats cool completely, then cut them into portions and place them in an airtight container. Store for up to 3 months! Reheat in the oven or microwave when ready to enjoy.

Variations
Almond Flour Baked Oats – Feel free to swap half of the rolled oats with almond flour. This adds a nutty flavor, boosts the cake-like texture, and adds a little more protein!
Baked Protein Oats – Stir in a scoop of your favorite protein powder along with the oats. The texture is still perfect and the oats will have more protein!
Baked Steel Cut Oats – For a heartier texture, try using steel cut oats instead of rolled oats. Be sure to increase the baking time by about 10-15 minutes, and add a bit more liquid to ensure everything cooks evenly.
Banana Baked Oats – Substitute 1/4 cup of almond milk for half a mashed ripe banana in the oat mixture for natural sweetness and extra moisture!
Chocolate Baked Oats – Mix in a tablespoon of cocoa powder with the oats and sprinkle chocolate chips on top for a decadent, dessert-like breakfast. I’m obsessed with this variation – it’s perfect for satisfying those sweet tooth cravings while still being nutritious!
Toppings – There are so many ways to top these oats! Add blueberries, nuts, a drizzle of creamy peanut butter, or a dollop of Greek yogurt. However you enjoy them, they’re SO delicious!

Do you need to add more milk if you add protein powder?
Christine McMichael replied:
I haven’t tried it, but I would think adding about 3-4 Tbsp of extra milk per scoop of protein powder would have great results!
