I remember with my first born, it took me FOREVER to develop the courage to take him out of the house. By the time I finally felt ready, it was the middle of summer and I was battling extreme heat, strong sun rays, and crazy Oklahoma weather.
Thankfully, all it took was that first time of going out with my little one to feel stronger and ready for the next time. Now we love being outside and getting a little bit of extra vitamin D when we can! If you’re looking for new ways to get outside with your baby and make the process a smooth one, then these tips are for you, friend!

10 Tips For Getting Outside With Baby
1. Wear Baby
The #1 best way to get outside with a newborn or older baby? Wear them! They love to be held close to mama, and it’s a great way to keep them safe from the sun. I love my WildBird Ring Sling because it’s easy to throw on, cool enough for warmer days, and sturdy enough to go for walks.
2. Bring A Picnic Blanket
This is especially great if you also have other kids with you! Whether you’re at the park or just in your own backyard, being able to throw a picnic blanket or mat down and set baby on it is a total life saver.
3. Bring Toys For Baby
You may think about bringing lots of toys for your toddler, but don’t forget to throw in some toys for baby as well! Perfect for adding to their picnic blanket and making the most out of their outdoor time.
4. Take Snacks
Always. Always snacks. Keep them in your bag, car, NEVER RUN OUT OF SNACKS! Kidding, sort of. But for older babies, this can definitely help them if you’re going to be out and about of a longer period of time! These baby teething wafers are always my go-to since they’re easy to throw in the diaper bag and have on hand.
5. Protect Baby From The Sun With A Hat
If you have nothing else, be sure that you have a sun hat for your little one this spring and summer! Especially if you’re going to be out for a while, such as a trip to the zoo or going for a swim. There are tons of options, but I love how this baby sun hat covers the back of their necks as well as bucket hats!
6. Wear A Nursing Friendly Top
Nothing worse than being out in the heat and realizing you need to nurse your baby, but your outfit is less than ideal for the situation. Been there too many times! If you’re nursing your baby, be sure to wear something cool and nursing-friendly to make life a little bit easier.
7. Long Sleeve Shirt For Baby
Make sure baby is wearing a cool, long sleeve shirt to protect them from the sun! If for some reason a long sleeve shirt isn’t an option, then this baby sun block is my favorite for keeping my little one protected.
8. Set Up A Playard
For the really hot days! This Easy Pop Up Playard is AMAZING, simple to use, and machine washable. Perfect for doing tummy time outside and just getting some fresh air in the backyard!
9. Bring Friends With You
Don’t go it alone! If this is your first time getting outside with your newborn, or even if it’s your 100th time, invite friends over to spend time outside with you and your little one. It definitely helps the experience be a fun one!
10. ENJOY Your Time!
Last but not least, ENJOY your time outside with your baby. It’s easy to get caught up in mama mode, protecting your little one from all the things. Trust me, I get it! But make the outdoor experience this spring and summer a fun one by keeping things light hearted and enjoying yourself in the process.
