Better Than Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich Recipe
I’ve loved the Chick-fil-A Spicy chicken sandwich for years. However, I don’t love the ingredients, and ordering out all the time isn’t great for my wallet. So, once I started making my own version at home, I honestly never looked back! This recipe has all the flavor and crunch, but it’s baked instead of fried and has 20 grams of protein. Plus, it’s easy enough to throw together on a weeknight! It’s better than takeout, healthier, and seriously so good.
Why You’ll Love This Homemade Spicy Chicken Sandwich
- Under an Hour (50 Minutes Total) – All you need is 10 minutes of prep time, then the rest of the time is cooking time in the oven.
- Healthy – Oven-baked instead of deep-fried, but still perfectly crispy. As long as you use a gluten-free bun, this recipe is completely gluten-free, too!
- Meal-Prep Friendly – Great for prepping in advance. Just reheat and enjoy for a filling meal in minutes!
- 20 g Protein – These sandwiches can be served as a filling meal on their own.
- Big Flavor – With every bite, you get bold spices, crunchy texture, and a creamy kick from the spicy mayo.

Spicy Chicken Sandwich Recipe Ingredients
Believe it or not, this spicy chicken sandwich recipe comes together with simple ingredients. The key to the bold flavor is using warm spices. Here’s what you’ll need:
Crispy Spicy Chicken
- Chicken – I use boneless, skinless chicken breast, but boneless, skinless chicken thighs would also work.
- Eggs – These allow the breading to cling to the chicken.
- Sriracha – Adds a touch of spice. Any hot sauce works great!
- Rice Chex Cereal – This is such an easy and minimal ingredient way to make healthier breadcrumbs! If preferred, regular or gluten-free breadcrumbs will also work.
- Spices – Sea salt, cayenne pepper, chili powder, garlic powder, paprika, and ground black pepper create the bold, spicy flavor we want.
Chick-Fil-A Sauce
- Mayo – Forms the base of the sauce. This avocado oil-based mayo is one of my favorites!
- Honey – Adds a touch of sweetness to balance the heat. Substitute maple syrup, if preferred.
- Dijon Mustard – For a little tang.
- Lemon Juice – The acidity cuts through some of the heaviness for a bright, well-balanced taste. Freshly squeezed is best!
- Spices – Garlic powder, paprika, and fine sea salt add depth and a warm, savory taste.
- Sriracha – For more heat.
Assembly
- Hamburger Buns – I use whole wheat hamburger buns, but any kind will work.
- Toppings – Dill pickle chips, sliced tomato, and lettuce or kale. But really, add anything you want!

How to Make Chick fil A Spicy Chicken Sandwich Recipe
You’ll be amazed by how easy this recipe comes together. You’ll need 50 minutes, a sheet pan, and a few bowls to get started. Here’s an overview of the process:
- Set up a dredging station – Whisk the eggs and Sriracha in a wide, shallow bowl. Then, crush the Chex cereal and combine it with the spices in a separate bowl.
- Bread the chicken – Slice the chicken in half, creating 2 thin pieces. Next, working one at a time, dip each piece in the egg mixture. Then, coat it with the cereal mixture, coating all the sides, and transfer it to a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
- Bake – Transfer the chicken to a preheated oven, and bake until golden and crisp.
- Prepare the sauce – While the chicken bakes, whisk all the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
- Assemble – Toast the hamburger buns in the oven until golden brown. Let the buns cool slightly, and spread the sauce on the bottom. Then, top them with a slice of tomato, lettuce, and crispy chicken. Enjoy warm!

Tips
- Use Thin, Even Chicken Breasts: For quicker, more even cooking, slice large chicken breasts in half lengthwise, or pound them to an even thickness. I aim for about ½ inch thick!
- Toast the Buns: It’s worth the extra few minutes! This adds a subtle crispness and prevents the sauce from seeping into the bread, which can make your sandwiches soggy.
- Rest the Chicken: Let the crispy chicken cool and rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. This allows the natural juices to redistribute, keeping it tender and juicy. I like to set it on a cooling rack to keep the breading from getting soggy!
- Add Your Own Toppings: I stuck with the traditional options to keep this spicy chicken sandwich recipe as authentic as possible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative! Add your favorite sandwich condiments to make this recipe your style. Great options include roasted red peppers, hot sauce, and hummus.
Variations
Extra Spicy Chick-fil-A Sandwich – Add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper to the coating and more sriracha to the sauce.
Air Fryer Spicy Chicken Sandwich – Bread the chicken as usual. Then, air fry it at 400°F for 14–16 minutes or until fully cooked, flipping halfway through. Work in batches as needed so as not to overcrowd the basket! There should be a little space between each piece.
Honey Buffalo Chicken Sandwich – Layer the buns with honey buffalo sauce instead of the homemade Chick-fil-A sauce.
Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit – Swap the bun for a warm biscuit, and omit the toppings and sauce. Then, drizzle honey butter on top of the chicken.

Serving Suggestions
For a fun meal that my kids LOVE, I pair my spicy chicken sandwiches with a side of yuca fries or homemade garlic truffle fries. I also like serving these sandwiches with a light side salad or crispy zucchini.
How to Store
Refrigerator: Store leftover chicken in an airtight container for up to 4 days. You can also store the sauce in a separate airtight container for up to 1 week!
Freezer: Transfer the cooked and cooled chicken (without toppings or buns) to a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months.
Reheating: Thaw frozen chicken in the fridge overnight. Reheat it in the oven or air fryer at 350°F for 10–15 minutes or until warmed through and crisp. Then, assemble the sandwiches as usual.

Chick fil A Chicken Sandwich Recipe (spicy!)
Equipment
Ingredients
For the Chicken
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons sriracha
- 3 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon cayenne
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 3 medium boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 1 1/2 pounds)
For the Sauce
- 1/2 cup avocado oil mayo
- 1 Tablespoon honey
- 2 teaspoons dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon sriracha
For the Sandwich
- 6 whole wheat hamburger buns
- dill pickle chips
- sliced tomato
- romaine lettuce or kale
Instructions
Prepare the Chicken
- Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with avocado oil spray.
- In a shallow wide bowl, whisk the eggs and sriracha.
- In a separate large bowl, crush the Chex by hand or pulse in a food processor, until it resembles very small crumbs.
- Mix with the salt, cayenne, chili powder, garlic powder, paprika and pepper.
- Slice each chicken breast in half horizontally so it creates 2 thin pieces of chicken. You will end up with 6 pieces of chicken total.
- Dip a piece of chicken in the egg mixture, then transfer to the seasoned-crushed Chex and coat all sides of the chicken. Let any excess crumbs fall off the chicken, and transfer the chicken to the prepared pan. Repeat with all chicken pieces.
- Bake at 425°F for 18 minutes. Then, remove the pan from the oven and flip each piece of chicken. Bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked.
Make the Sauce
- While chicken is cooking, mix all sauce ingredients in a medium bowl.
Assemble the Sandwiches
- Lower the oven temperature to 350°F, then toast the hamburger buns on a baking sheet for about 10 minutes.
- Let the buns cool for 2 to 3 minutes, then spread the sauce onto the bottom of each bun. Top with a slice of tomato, lettuce, the crispy chicken, and the top of the bun.
Notes
- To Cook in the Air Fryer: Bread the chicken as usual. Then, air fry it at 400°F for 14–16 minutes or until fully cooked, flipping halfway through. Work in batches as needed so as not to overcrowd the basket! There should be a little space between each piece.
- Add your favorite sandwich condiments to make this recipe your style. Ex: roasted red peppers, hot sauce, hummus
