Cheesy Boursin Pasta with Chicken Sausage
I love to test out viral internet recipes and put my own fun twist on them, like these Viral Hot Honey Ground Beef Bowls and Viral Thin Mint Brownie Balls. However, one of my particular favorites is the viral feta bake that went around the internet. I loved the cheesy flavor and ease of the dish!
Today I’m sharing my own twist on this viral recipe, adding fresh veggies and protein. The entire thing cooks in a single casserole dish, is done in 35 minutes TOTAL time, and always turns out so perfect. The Boursin melts into the broth as it bakes, creating a creamy, savory sauce that coats every bite of pasta. It’s rich and comforting and tastes like something you’d order at a restaurant. Even my kids love this recipe, and I love how incredibly easy it is to make!

Why You’ll Love This Chicken and Orzo Bake Recipe
- 35 Minutes Total – Just dice the veggies, combine the ingredients, and bake! It’s a game-changer on busy weeknights.
- 27 Grams Protein – Many pasta bakes are made with little to no protein, but not this recipe! I also have suggestions for how you can add more.
- Easily Customizable – Swap the protein, add extra veggies, or use a different pasta.
- Meal-Prep Friendly – One batch makes enough for at least 4 servings (if not more), and keeps well for several days.
Ingredients Needed for Boursin Orzo Bake with Chicken Sausage
- Orzo Pasta – Orzo pasta is light, soft, and kind of looks like rice. But it’s actually a delicious type of pasta! I love using high-protein orzo, but regular works just fine if you can’t find it.
- Chicken Sausage – Applegate has a great option, but any brand will do.
- Veggies – Cherry tomatoes add a pop of color along with vitamins, nutrients, and fiber.
- Boursin Cheese – A soft, creamy, slightly crumbly cheese flavored with garlic and herbs. A block of feta (plain or flavored) is also a great option.
- Chicken Broth – Vegetable broth is another good option. I recommend low-sodium varieties!
- Olive Oil – You can use any cooking oil, but I prefer the strong, slightly peppery taste of olive oil for this Boursin pasta.
- Minced Garlic – Pre-minced garlic works in a pinch. It’s one of my favorite ways to reduce prep time!
- Salt/Pepper -This recipe is already pretty salty with the chicken broth and Boursin, so the added salt is optional and can be adjusted to taste!

Tips for the Best Boursin Orzo Chicken Bake
- No Need to Pre-Cook the Orzo – It cooks right in the dish! Just make sure everything is covered in broth before baking, or the orzo will still be hard.
- Slice the Sausage Thin – This helps it warm through quickly and distributes the flavor throughout the dish.
- Don’t Skip the Stirring Step – After baking, give everything a good stir to fully incorporate the melted Boursin into a creamy sauce.
- Let it “Rest” – If you have time, let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes after it bakes. This helps it cool slightly and allows the orzo to really soak up all of the liquid, making for an extra cream and flavorful meal!

Chicken and Orzo Bake Recipe Variations
- Spicy – Amp up the heat with a dash of red pepper flakes, a splash of hot sauce, or spicy chicken sausage.
- Vegetarian – Swap the chicken sausage with your favorite plant-based sausage. Or, omit it completely, and add extra veggies like zucchini, mushrooms, or roasted red peppers.
- Broccoli – Replace the spinach with steamed or roasted broccoli for a slightly heartier dish.
- Gluten-Free – Use gluten-free orzo, or swap it with cooked short-grain rice or gluten-free pasta, and adjust the cooking time as needed.
- Sausage – Replace the sausage with peeled shrimp, adding them halfway through baking. Or, use shredded chicken instead!
Serving Suggestions for Chicken and Orzo Bake
- Fresh basil or parsley on top
- Red pepper flakes for a little heat
- Extra black pepper
- Grated parmesan
- A squeeze of lemon right before serving
- Serve with a simple green salad or roasted veggies on the side
How to Store Boursin Orzo Bake with Chicken Sausage
Refrigerator – Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. The sauce may thicken slightly as it chills, but it reheats nicely!
Freezer – While you can freeze it, this pasta is best enjoyed fresh or refrigerated. If freezing, let it cool completely and store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Just note that the texture of the orzo may soften slightly after thawing.
How to Reheat Orzo Boursin Bake
Warm leftovers in the microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of broth or water to loosen up the sauce. Stir well and heat until warmed through.

Boursin Orzo Bake with Chicken Sausage FAQs
Orzo is a small pasta that looks like rice. It cooks up soft and tender, and it’s great for baked dishes like this because it soaks up flavor and gets nice and creamy.
Yes, you can! You can assemble everything in the casserole dish, cover it, and keep it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready, bake it as directed. If it’s going into the oven cold, it may need a few extra minutes to fully cook through.
The biggest thing is using enough liquid and not overbaking it. Orzo absorbs broth quickly, so the full amount helps it stay saucy. Once it’s done baking, mix everything really well so the Boursin melts into the broth and turns into that creamy sauce. For leftovers, a splash of broth when reheating helps bring the creaminess back.

Notes
- This recipe is already pretty salty with the chicken broth and Boursin, so the added salt is optional and to taste!
- For the best orzo casserole, let the dish sit for 5-10 minutes after baking to slightly cool and to let the orzo soak up everything a bit more. It’s perfect this way!
- Nutrition for this recipe is calculated with regular orzo pasta, but feel free to use this high-protein orzo to add more protein!

Eryn Tone says:
Going to make this tonight for my pasta loving family!! Can I use pork sausage and if so, can I put it in raw to cook?
Thank you.
JOL Team replied:
You can absolutely use pork sausage! If it’s a cured pork sausage such as kielbasa, I would make it the same way. If using a raw ground or cased Italian sausage I would brown the sausage first to add depth of flavor, but either one will be delicious!
Ann says:
Do you usually use a 9×13 casserole dish or smaller? Thanks!
Jar Of Lemons replied:
9X13 works great! 🙂
Alicia Peery says:
Could you use small broccli florets for spinach?
JOL Team replied:
Hey Alicia, Yes! Broccoli would be a delicious option in this.
Susannah says:
I would love to make this with wild rice. How would you suggest I adapt the recipe for that? Thank you!
JOL Team replied:
Hey Susannah, thank you so much for the comment! Wild rice with this sounds delicious! Honestly, I have never tried cooking wild rice by baking it so without testing that I don’t feel I can confidently give you a recipe adaption at this time.

Wow, this dish is a winner. It’s really delicious, and extra easy to make too. Will definitely make this meal for my family again.
Erin says:
Loved it! I did have to put it back in for 5 more minutes after I stirred. The pasta wasn’t quite done and there was still a lot of liquid. Next time I will add the spinach at the end.
Jar Of Lemons replied:
Glad you enjoyed this, Erin! Thanks for the review.
