Viral Pesto Eggs Recipe – The Most Brilliant Way to Cook Eggs!
You guys have been LOVING the viral pesto eggs recipe on social media, and I’m 100% here for it, too! The eggs are cooked in pesto sauce instead of oil, which is basically a life-changing hack that everyone needs to know about (and has me wondering what else I can cook in pesto??).
I’ve added these pesto eggs to my favorite low-carb everything bagels along with cottage cheese (cream cheese or goat cheese would be great, too) and then topped the whole thing off with chili crunch for a little kick. These bagels are next-level!

My Favorite Pesto for Fried Eggs
You can always use store-bought pesto in a time crunch. But here are a few of my healthier homemade pesto favorites:
Easy Kale Pesto Recipe – This quick and easy homemade kale pesto is great for keeping on hand!
5-Minute Healthy Spinach Basil Pesto – Make this spinach pesto in just 5 minutes and then add it to EVERYTHING. It’s so good!
Ingredients for Pesto Egg Bagels
Pesto – Homemade pesto or store-bought basil pesto are both great options.
Eggs – Feel free to add the eggs right into the pan, or whisk them in a bowl before getting started!
Salt/Pepper – To taste, keeping in mind that pesto is often very salty and you may not need to add very much extra seasoning.
Low-Carb Everything Bagels – I love these bagels! They’re perfect for a lower-carb breakfast, but really any type of savory or plain bagel works great.
Cottage Cheese – Higher in protein and pairs so well with the textures and flavors! You can also use creamy goat cheese, plain cream cheese, or mascarpone.
Chili Crunch – I love chili crunch! It has just the right amount of kick and flavor for this recipe and pairs so perfectly.

How to Make Pesto Eggs
It only takes about 5-7 minutes to make Pesto Eggs! They’re incredibly easy and perfect for adding to bagels, toast, or serving with fruit. Here’s how to make this Pesto Eggs recipe (2 ways):
Making 2 Servings
- Heat the pesto in a non-stick pan.
- Add the eggs and seasoning to taste.
- Cook for 3-4 minutes, then remove (if sunny side up) or flip over and cook for another 1-2 minutes for a fried egg.
- Add to an open-faced bagel slice with cheese and chili crunch!

Making a Big Batch
This recipe can work great for a crowd! Just double or trip the recipe below and cook it all in the same skillet. You can make a bagel or toast bar with the cheese and chili crunch in serving containers!
Pesto Eggs Recipe Variations
- Use Different Pesto – Swap the classic basil pesto for sun-dried tomato pesto, arugula pesto, or even a spicy jalapeño pesto for a little kick!
- Add Cheese – A sprinkle of feta, goat cheese, or shredded mozzarella on top takes these eggs to the next level.
- Dairy-Free – Use a dairy-free pesto and skip the cheese, or opt for a plant-based cheese alternative.
- Change Up the Eggs – Scramble them in the pesto instead of frying, or make soft-boiled eggs and drizzle with warm pesto before serving.
- Add Veggies – Sauté some spinach, cherry tomatoes, or zucchini in the pesto before cracking in the eggs for extra nutrition and color.
- Spice – Add crushed red pepper flakes or a little hot sauce if you like extra heat!
Serving Suggestions for Pesto Eggs
Pesto eggs are super versatile and come together quickly, which makes them perfect for busy mornings, lazy weekend brunch, or even a simple lunch. Here are my favorite ways to serve them:
- On Toast – Pile the eggs onto a slice of sourdough or multigrain toast. Add sliced avocado or a spread of ricotta for extra creaminess!
- With a Side Salad – A simple arugula salad with lemon vinaigrette balances the richness of the pesto.
- Over Roasted Potatoes – Crispy breakfast potatoes or sweet potatoes make the perfect base for these flavorful eggs. So good.
- In a Breakfast Bowl – Layer the eggs over quinoa or rice, and add roasted veggies for a hearty, balanced meal.
- In a Wrap – Turn it into a breakfast wrap with a whole wheat tortilla, spinach, and maybe a little cheese!
