Ingredients for Cookie Dough Overnight Oats
I love that the ingredients are easy to find and simple. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Rolled Oats – You can also use old-fashioned oats, but stay away from quick oats or steel cut oats to keep the yummy texture!
- Chia Seeds – These add extra protein, but you can omit if preferred.
- Vanilla Protein Powder – Vanilla protein powder is my favorite because of the flavor, but you can sub for your favorite protein powder if preferred.
- Salt
- Cottage Cheese – You can also use Greek yogurt or a dairy-free alternative. Full fat cottage cheese works best, but any type is great.
- Milk – Regular dairy milk is great or you can also use any dairy-free alternative, such as almond milk, ripple milk, or soy milk.
- Maple Syrup – Honey is another healthy option!
- Almond Butter – A few other great options are cashew butter, peanut butter, or a nut-free alternative such as sunflower seed butter.
- Chocolate Chips – Mini chocolate chips work great, too. Add as many as you want!

How to Make Cookie Dough Overnight Oats
The cottage cheese version is so smooth and creamy and I love that they come together in just 5 minutes! You can also make these overnight oats with Greek yogurt, another delicious option. Here’s how to make Cookie Dough Overnight Oats:
Method #1: Blended Oats
- Blend It Together: Combine all ingredients except the chocolate chips in a blender until smooth.
- Fold in the Chocolate Chips
- Store Overnight:Â Pour into overnight oat jars and refrigerate overnight.
- The Next Morning: Add a splash of milk if needed to adjust thickness and texture, then top with your favorite mix-ins and enjoy!
Method #2: Regular Overnight Oats
- Blend the Cottage Cheese: If using cottage cheese, go ahead and blend it first. Otherwise you can skip this step!
- Divide & Mix Ingredients: Divide the ingredients into two overnight oats jars and mix.
- Store Overnight: Add lids and store in the refrigerator overnight.
- Ready to Go in the Morning:Â Add a splash of milk if needed to adjust thickness and texture, then top with your favorite mix-ins and enjoy!
TIP: Prefer Greek yogurt? Skip blending, mix everything together, and fold in the chocolate chips before refrigerating.

Variations for Cottage Cheese Overnight Oats
- Nut-Free Option: Swap almond butter for sunflower seed butter.
- Dairy-Free: Use a plant-based yogurt or cottage cheese alternative.
- Extra Chocolate: Stir in cocoa powder for a chocolate-lover’s version.
- Crunchy Toppings: Add crushed nuts or granola for texture and more protein.

How to Store Cookie Dough Overnight Oats
One of the best things about overnight oats is how easy they are to store and enjoy throughout the week. Here’s what you need to know:
- Refrigerator: Store your overnight oats in airtight containers, like mason jars, in the refrigerator. They’ll stay fresh for up to 4 days, making them perfect for meal prep!
- Freezer: Want to prep even further ahead? You can freeze these oats in single-serving containers for up to 3 months. Just let them thaw in the fridge overnight before enjoying.
For both options, give the oats a good stir before eating and add a small amount of milk if you want a thinner consistency. Top with your favorite mix-ins just before serving for the best texture and flavor!

Savannah says:
What to do if they turn out runny?
JOL Team replied:
Hey Savannah, so sorry your overnight oats were runny. You could add some chia seeds as they’ll absorb liquids. I would recommend next time start with a little less milk before placing them in the fridge overnight. If you used the 1-1/2 cups then reduce to 1 cup. You can then add more the next day if you find they’re too thick. Hope that helps!
Carolyn says:
This looks yummy Christine! Will this recipe work without using protein powder?
Christine replied:
You can leave it out, but it’ll make the texture a bit thinner. If you want to keep the texture, just swap it for 2-3 Tablespoons of almond flour!
