Watch this video on how to make an Easy Flax Egg Recipe (Vegan Egg Substitute)!
While you could always purchase a vegan egg substitute at the store or this vegan egg substitute mix off of Amazon, I love that this Easy Flax Egg Recipe uses flaxseed. It’s loaded with fiber, protein, omega-3’s, and so many good things!
Although Flax Egg recipes are nothing new to the food world, I just had to post one on here for all of my vegan friends (and non-vegan, for that matter). It’s too amazing to not talk about!

What is a Flaxseed Egg?
A flax egg is a vegan egg substitute made with just two ingredients: ground flaxseed and water. It’s easy to make by whisking together the ingredients, letting it thicken for a few minutes, then adding to almost any recipe you want to replace egg in! Flax egg works especially great in baked goods.
Flax Egg Ratio
1 Tbsp of finely ground flaxseed mixed with 3 Tbsp of water should be the equivalent of 1 egg! Simply mix it together for about 3-4 minutes and then refrigerate for 15 minutes (or until gelatinous).

Flax Egg Ingredients
You’ll only need TWO simple ingredients to make a flax egg! Here’s what you’ll need:
Ground Flaxseed – Also known as flaxseed meal. This is different than whole flax seed or raw flax seed.
Water – Room temperature water is best. You’ll only need a little bit!
How to Make a Flax Egg
It’s incredibly easy to make a flax egg at home! Here’s how to whip it up in just a few minutes:
- Mix or whisk the ground flaxseed and water together in a small bowl.
- Let thicken in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes, until it’s slightly thicker than egg consistency.
- That’s it! It’s ready to add to any baked good recipe and replace regular eggs.
TIP: It’s important to note that flax egg will not cook like a regular egg on the stovetop! It’s best used as a vegan egg substitute in baked goods or anytime that egg is used as a binding agent.
