Ingredients/Substitutions
The best part about these toddler muffins is that they’re made with healthy, easy-to-find ingredients that your little one will love. Here’s what you’ll need:
Whole Wheat Flour – I used whole wheat flour in this recipe, but feel free to use regular all-purpose flour instead (or a mix of both)!
Oatmeal Baby Cereal – For the oats, I used oatmeal baby cereal. Other options include rolled oats that have been lightly-blended or oat flour!
Banana – This recipe calls for a ripe, mashed banana.
Applesauce – Unsweetened applesauce adds moisture and a delicious flavor to these toddler muffins!
Coconut Oil – Don’t have coconut oil on hand? Feel free to substitute with lightly melted butter instead!
Blueberries – Frozen blueberries work best in this recipe, but fresh blueberries also taste great. You can also substitute with frozen blackberries or strawberries!
How to make Healthy Toddler Muffins
Making toddler muffins is SUPER easy! Here’s how to make them in 30 minutes or less:
1. Combine the dry ingredients.
2. Mash the banana.
3. Mix in the liquid ingredients until smooth.
4. Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix.
5. Add in the blueberries and mix.
6. Pour into a lined muffin or cupcake tin and bake!
Tips for making the best toddler muffins
- Use a ripe banana to ensure that it mashes well.
- Use a fork to mash the banana until (mostly) smooth. If the banana is lumpy, the batter will be overly lumpy!
- Once the ingredients are combined, be sure to keep from OVER mixing the batter.
- The batter should be thick (since we are working with healthy alternatives, such as whole wheat flour and oatmeal cereal), but also light and fluffy.
What age can babies eat muffins?
This is very dependent on your little one’s ability to eat solid foods. However, in general, baby and toddler muffins can be eaten anywhere from as early as 6 months to 1 year old!
For my toddler, it was best to wait until he was almost 1 year old before he could really eat muffins. But it’s all about where your little one is at with solid foods!

If I don’t have butter or coconut oil what could I use instead?
Christine McMichael replied:
Canola oil works, too. Avocado oil or olive oil can work, but they will change the texture just a little bit!
Raynel says:
Can these be altered to be gluten free? Thanks!
Christine McMichael replied:
Yes! You can use a gluten-free all-purpose flour as an alternative. Enjoy!
Kaylee says:
Love these! They turned out super moist and I had to snack on them too 🙂 I added twice the banana and for me it made 24 mini muffins. Perfect for my 9 month old!

Hi, I am trying your recipe out tonight for my 14 month daughter. I’m sure she will enjoy it! I did do some modifying since I have went vegan like sub the eggs for flex eggs (same ratio for the 2 eggs) and added a few more blueberries but everything I have followed exactly! I can’t wait to see how they turn out. Thanks for sharing this recipe!!

These are super yummy – I even enjoyed them! I did not have any applesauce on hand so I used an additional banana instead (as I saw someone else asked about), plus I added an additional tablespoon of milk, swapped the coconut oil for butter and added a little maple syrup. Delicious! Thanks for sharing!

My daughter is allergic to oats. What can I add/substitute instead of the oats?

I like to keep them in an airtight container at room temp, but after a few days I move them to the fridge. You can also store them in the freezer and thaw them out the night before. Enjoy!
Rachel says:
Made these for my 7 mos old for baby led weaning. Perfectly dense, moist and flavorful. Followed the recipe exactly (which I almost never do) and used frozen blueberries. Did turn the oven up to 400 at the start to try to get muffin tops… they didn’t rise too much but still texture is excellent. Will be making again
Victoria says:
What changes should I make if I want to avoid the applesauce? Maybe add more bananas?
Christine McMichael replied:
Yes, more mashed banana would work great!
Jo says:
Definitely best for toddler, but I would just devour it all myself. Itllooks so delicious! With whole wheat flour, oatmeal definitely as healthy as it gets!
