Toddler Muffins Ingredients and Substitutions
The best part about these toddler muffins is that they’re made with healthy, easy-to-find ingredients that your little one will love. Here’s what you’ll need:

Whole Wheat Flour – I used whole wheat flour in this recipe, but feel free to use regular all-purpose flour instead (or a mix of both)!
Oatmeal Baby Cereal – For the oats, I used oatmeal baby cereal. Other options include rolled oats that have been lightly-blended or oat flour!
Banana – This recipe calls for a ripe, mashed banana.
Applesauce – Unsweetened applesauce adds moisture and a delicious flavor to these toddler muffins!
Coconut Oil – Don’t have coconut oil on hand? Feel free to substitute with lightly melted butter instead!
Blueberries – Frozen blueberries work best in this recipe, but fresh blueberries also taste great. You can also substitute with frozen blackberries or strawberries!

How to Make Healthy Muffins for Kids
Making toddler muffins is SUPER easy! Here’s how to make them in 30 minutes or less:
1. Combine the dry ingredients.

2. Mash the banana.
3. Mix in the liquid ingredients until smooth.

4. Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix.
5. Add in the blueberries and mix.

6. Pour into a lined muffin or cupcake tin and bake!

Tips for Making the Best Toddler Banana Muffins
- Use a ripe banana to ensure that it mashes well.
- Use a fork to mash the banana until (mostly) smooth. If the banana is lumpy, the batter will be overly lumpy!
- Once the ingredients are combined, be sure to keep from OVER mixing the batter.
- The batter should be thick (since we are working with healthy alternatives, such as whole wheat flour and oatmeal cereal), but also light and fluffy.
What age can babies eat muffins?
This is very dependent on your little one’s ability to eat solid foods. However, in general, baby and toddler muffins can be eaten anywhere from as early as 6 months to 1 year old!
For my toddler, it was best to wait until he was almost 1 year old before he could really eat muffins. But it’s all about where your little one is at with solid foods!
How to Store Toddler Muffins
These toddler muffins actually store really well, which makes them perfect for meal prep or keeping on hand for easy snacks throughout the week. I love making a batch and saving a few in the freezer for those mornings when everyone needs breakfast fast!
- Refrigerator – Let them cool completely, then keep the muffins in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days. This is my favorite option if I’m planning to use them throughout the week!
- Freezer – Freeze the muffins in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months. Let them cool completely first so they don’t get icy in the freezer.
- Reheat – Warm refrigerated muffins in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds. For frozen muffins, thaw overnight in the fridge or microwave in short intervals until warmed through.

Rachel says:
Thank you for this recipe!! My almost 2-year-old has suddenly become a picky eater and never seems to want to eat anything we give her. We made these muffins together tonight and she devoured one (full size muffin) and asked for another! So glad to have something she will actually eat! THANK YOU! (P.S. Us parents enjoyed the muffins, too!)
Jar Of Lemons replied:
So glad to hear this, Rachel! Glad you all enjoyed these muffins.
Elaine says:
I make these for my 93 year old father. He is diabetic and needs tasty, wholesome, low sugar snacks and these muffins are perfect. He says they are delicious! I also add some strawberries or raspberries.
Amanda says:
These are great! i am not a good cook at all and end up throwing away so many new things i try. These were easy, not time consuming and my 1 year old and i both love them. Also love how healthy they are and that we could use up so many ingredients we already had on hand. Thank you for sharing this recipe!
