What is Matcha?
Matcha is a very finely ground green tea originating from China. It’s used in all sorts of food and drinks from noodles, cakes, ice cream, hot and cold drinks and delicious breakfast recipes like this matcha smoothie bowl!
Because matcha contains caffeine it’s a great way to keep you energized and give you a boost throughout the day. This matcha smoothie bowl is the perfect way to incorporate it into your diet. Not only will the matcha give you a nice energy kick, but it’s also packed full of delicious, healthy and juicy fruits!
The Best Matcha Powders
Here are my favorite matcha powders for smoothies, lattes, energy bites, and more!
- Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen – this one is hands down my favorite. Although it’s not a “true” matcha powder since it has collagen peptides added, I find that this one holds up the best in lattes, energy bites, and other recipes. It’s truly the best and I love that it has protein as well!!
- Thrive Market Organic Matcha – this is a great matcha powder for everyday recipes and teas.
- Kiss Me Organics Matcha Green Tea Powder – another great option that’s organic and tastes amazing!
Also, this Matcha Tea Frother is such a great tool for frothy lattes and mixing matcha powder into recipes!

Is Too Much Matcha Bad?
Matcha is just like any other caffeine source, so don’t go overboard with it. If you intake a lot of caffeine each day you’re likely to be hit with caffeine withdrawal symptoms if you stop drinking it, which is not good. Like everything, matcha should be consumed in moderation to most benefit from its nutrition!
Ingredients for This Recipe
You only need 5 simple ingredients to make these delicious matcha smoothie bowls!
Dates – Dates add nutrition as well as sweeten these delicious smoothie bowls! Feel free to use honey or agave syrup instead if you don’t have pitted dates on hand.
Almond Milk – Regular or unsweetened almond milk is the base liquid in this recipe. Any type of milk will also work great!
Matcha Powder – I used Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen, but this recipe works wonderfully with any type of matcha powder.
Nut Butter – Almond or cashew butter add healthy fats and thicken the smoothie.
Frozen Bananas – Blending frozen bananas into these matcha smoothie bowls make them thick, creamy, and taste like ice cream for breakfast!
Other variations: feel free to add frozen pineapple, apples, frozen strawberries, or more ice to thicken these smoothie bowls to the desired consistency!
